I've been a cord cutter since January 2011, and while I never thought I'd look back, my TV habits have changed in ways I never could have predicted. While I've always streamed, my viewing has shifted from traditional TV shows to a more concentrated focus on specific, interest-based content.
What's On My Watch List
I don't watch as many current TV shows as I used to, but there are still a few that catch my attention. For instance, I'm currently watching Only Murders in the Building, which is a great mystery-comedy series on Hulu. But with so much content out there, it's easier to find myself gravitating towards things that perfectly match my interests.
My Shift to YouTube
My viewing has increasingly shifted to YouTube. The variety and depth of content there, from history lessons to puzzle-solving, is amazing. My personal favorites are the reaction videos from Vlogging Through History and the incredible Sudoku puzzles on Cracking the Cryptic. It's a different way of consuming media, but I find it more engaging than just sitting down to watch a standard series.
The only downside to this shift has been the ads. My opinion on commercials has changed; while I used to be able to tolerate them, the ads on YouTube have become more and more annoying. But despite that, I've really enjoyed my new way of watching.
Finding Old Favorites on Free Services
In addition to YouTube, I've also found myself occasionally watching older series on free ad-supported streaming TV (FAST) services. These channels, like The Roku Channel and Tubi, are perfect for when I want to latch on to an older show. I've found myself watching classic British mysteries like Midsomer Murders on Tubi and New Tricks on The Roku Channel. It's a great way to revisit shows I enjoy without paying for another subscription.
So, I don't watch TV like I used to. But I watch TV like I want to. That's what streaming does for me. I didn't cut the cord for this reason, but rather to save money. I'm saving money, but my viewing habits are changing, and they're changing to suit me. My Streaming Life is good.
