I am taking a new look at one of my favorite niche streaming services, Pub-D-Hub, to see how it fares in 2025. With subscription video on demand (SVOD) prices soaring and the free ad-supported television (FAST) market constantly exploding, it’s a good time to check on the real budget options. Pub-D-Hub remains a bedrock, a highly niche service dedicated exclusively to Public Domain (PD) content -- classic films, cartoons, and old-time radio programs -- that provides exceptional value in a way no other service can. It's an essential part of my cord-cutting toolkit, offering a simple, affordable, and quality experience. This update covers its price, features, and device support in 2025.
The Price of Ad-Free Value
The most striking thing about Pub-D-Hub is that its price remains almost comically low, especially when compared to the dozens of other streaming services that have hiked prices over the last year.
The service maintains a three-tier structure:
- The Basic service is still completely free to use.
- The Pub-D-Hub Gold tier, which unlocks premium VOD content and features like searching, is only ($$4/year) or less.
- The Gold Plus add-on, which unlocks the full channel lineup and doubles device limits, brings the total annual cost to around ($$6/year).
For perspective, the total cost for the entire year is less than the monthly price of many individual FAST-competitors' premium add-ons. You get a huge amount of ad-free VOD and live content for under a dollar a month.
Features and Content Growth
The service has grown its offering while keeping its focus squarely on vintage public domain content. The small annual fee grants you several highly valued features:
- VOD Library: The core benefit remains access to a vast and growing library of classic films, TV shows, shorts, and cartoons. Crucially, all VOD content on paid tiers is commercial-free, providing a premium viewing experience that most free FAST services cannot touch.
- Live Channels: With the Gold Plus add-on, you gain access to the full lineup of over 300 live streaming channels. This huge selection of curated vintage and genre content makes it a compelling alternative to channel-flipping on larger platforms.
- Quality of Life: Both paid tiers include essential updates like a SEARCH capability for Gold subscribers, which is critical for navigating a public domain library containing hundreds of hours of content.
- New Experiences: Mention of exclusive features like the Gold Plus "Experiences" (e.g., Drive-In Experience, Cartoon Experience).
Device Compatibility and Key Caveats
This is the area where Pub-D-Hub is a bit more niche than larger platforms, which is an important consideration for your streaming environment.
- Roku: Full Native Support. The service works best on Roku devices, where it has a stable, dedicated app. The Gold Plus subscription offers a generous limit of 8 linked Roku devices per account.
- Fire TV (Older Fire OS): Works via App. The dedicated app works well on most existing Fire TV devices, such as Fire TV Sticks and the Fire TV Cube.
- Newer Fire TV (Vega OS): Status Unknown. The app works on existing Fire OS devices, but newer devices running Amazon's Linux-based Vega OS are a major question mark. While Amazon has a program to cloud-stream older apps, Pub-D-Hub's compatibility with Vega OS has not been confirmed. This is an important detail for anyone considering a brand-new Fire TV device.
- Apple TV & Google TV: Web Browser Only. The service does not offer native apps for either of these major platforms. Subscribers must rely on the excellent mobile web app and stream content from a computer, tablet, or smartphone.
Device Limits
For those who have a large number of devices -- which is common in My Streaming Life -- the service is generous with its limits:
- Dedicated Streamers: Up to 8 Roku devices with a Gold Plus subscription.
- Web/Mobile Devices: You can stream to an unlimited number of your computers, tablets, and mobile phones via the web browser.
Pub-D-Hub is a Classic
Pub-D-Hub is a rare example of a streaming service that has added features and maintained incredible value without resorting to significant price hikes. If you love classic content and detest commercials, the small annual fee is an easy choice. My Streaming Life often involves a mix of the biggest names in entertainment, but this small, niche service has earned its place on my list for nearly a decade by focusing on quality and affordability.
