Paramount+ price increase

It was announced recently that Showtime and Paramount+ apps would be merged into a single app. Now, the price increase -- you knew there would be a price increase, right? -- is known.

There was speculation that prices would go up $1 to $2 per month, and that turns out to be right on target.

Cord Cutters News published the details recently:

Paramount+ will be raising the price of its service by $1 to $2 a month account for the new Showtime content. The ad-supported plan will go up to $5.99 a month, and the ad-free version will go up to $11.99 a month.

When this merger happens, the Showtime app will be shut down later this year, and you will need to access Showtime content through the Paramount+ app.

In the last couple of years, Paramount+ has offered a Showtime add-on for only $1 or $2 more per month. Now that will be the regular price and regular service.

My Streaming Life has the $5 (soon to be $6) per month version because it's included with Walmart+. I don't know if Walmart+ will continue to include the service, but I hope they do.

I've mentioned before that I manage the TV setup for a couple of houses. At my mother's house -- it belongs to me and two of my sisters since my mother's passing -- I bought and paid to set up a TV antenna. ION Mystery is the new name of Court TV Mystery, but that's not the real mystery

I saw a news release from ION announcing the name change of the Court TV Mystery channel. They're all owned by the same company, so it's a name change. Or a rebranding. Or something. If you don't know the background of ION, it started as Pax TV, entered and left deals with NBC, changed the name a couple of times, settling on ION, although the capitalization changed a few times. The news release from earlier this week uses all capital letters, so for now, so will I . "Mystery has added popular procedural dramas to its schedule and with the network's programming now more connected with the hall of fame line-up of hit dramas on ION, aligning the two networks creates increased consumer recognition, expands brand affinity and cross-promotional strength, and facilitates the ability to naturally share content and more," said Lisa Knutson, president of Scripps Networks They even had a video. Finally cutting the cord and saving pennies

As I mentioned before, I spent a year analyzing my TV usage, and calculating to see if I could stream what I watched instead of paying for cable, and doing so for a better price, In late 2009, I concluded I couldn't. But it was close. So, I decided I'd wait a year and try again. So, for all of 2010, I kept cable and we watched TV, time-shifting/on-demand watching via TiVo most of the time. Then, toward the end of the year, I pulled out my trusty spreadsheet and updated it with all the shows I watched on cable, and figured out how much it would cost me to stream that same content. Now, at the time, that would be by purchasing the shows from Amazon or from Apple's iTunes store. But, as I was watching on-demand anyway -- watching a recording from TiVo is no different than on-demand -- that wasn't a problem.
