II expand my TV subscriptions during college football season to watch the various ESPN and Fox Sports channels, but once bowl season is done, I cut back and do not pay for services year-round. My son has a similar strategy in his streaming, but his focus is on pro football.
While I have enjoyed using the ESPN Unlimited/Fox One bundle, supplemented with my antenna, to watch all the college ballgames I've wanted to watch, he subscribes to YouTube TV during football season, for the NFL options that streaming platform offers. Like me, he cuts back once the season is done.
We've seen more and more people doing the same thing -- subscribing to a live streaming service during part of the year and cutting back the rest of the time -- and apparently so have the vMVPD (streaming cable) services.
YouTube TV has entered the small bundle market, joining DirecTV, Fubo, and others by offering new genre plans. Michael Timmermann of Michael Saves has some thoughts on YouTube TV's recent announcement.
I'm not sure if YouTube TV has a plan that would be something I'd want to keep year-round, but I am interested in the full details once they release them. My Streaming Life focuses on saving money and I've been able to find content that suits my viewing habits without a year-round service. However, there is probably an audience for the smaller packages. Who knows, YouTube TV's new sports-only may become my football sports package during the fall.
