Microsoft recently pulled a Windows 11 preview update after widespread installation failures, then followed up with an out-of-band fix to address the issue. In the video below, Brian from Britec walks through what went wrong, who was affected, and what the new update is intended to fix.

Microsoft has released an out-of-band update, KB5086672, to fix widespread installation failures caused by the earlier Windows 11 preview update KB5079391. That preview build, which affected recent Windows 11 versions including 24H2, was pulled after many users encountered errors such as 0x80073712, often tied to missing or corrupted system files. The new update is cumulative, meaning it both resolves the installation issue and restores the features originally intended for the preview release, including various reliability and performance improvements. While Microsoft is now pushing the corrected update, some observers recommend waiting a short period before installing optional preview updates to ensure stability following a series of recent patching issues.

What This Means for Windows 11 Users

For most users, this issue was limited to optional preview updates rather than the standard monthly security patches, which reduces the overall risk. However, it is a reminder that preview updates are effectively early releases and can introduce unexpected problems. If stability is the priority, skipping optional updates and waiting for the next full release cycle remains the safer approach.
