Your Guide to Cord-Cutting, Home Media, and Streaming News.

One of the biggest traps for any cord-cutter is "subscription creep." You start by canceling a $150 cable bill, but after adding a few $10 or $15 monthly services, you suddenly realize you are back where you started. To keep your budget under control while still enjoying premium content, you should follow the Rule of Three.

The Rule of Three is a simple framework for organizing your streaming library into three distinct tiers: the Anchor, the Rotator, and the Specialist.

1. The Anchor Service

This is your "always-on" service. For many, this is a Live TV streaming service like YouTube TV or Hulu+Live TV that provides local channels, sports, and news. For others, it might be a massive library like Disney Plus or Netflix that the household uses daily. You only keep one Anchor at a time.

2. The Rotating Service

The biggest advantage of streaming is the lack of long-term contracts. A Rotating service is one you subscribe to for a specific reason -- perhaps a new season of a favorite show or a movie premiere. Once you have finished that series, you cancel it and rotate to a different service. You should never have more than one "Rotator" active at once.

3. The Specialist

This tier is for your specific passions. If you are a fan of classic cinema, this might be the Criterion Channel. If you love British mysteries, it could be BritBox or Acorn TV. Like the Anchor, this is often a long-term subscription, but because these services are usually cheaper ($6 to $11), they fit into a lean budget as your third and final slot.

Why It Works

By limiting yourself to three paid services, you force yourself to evaluate what you actually watch. If you want to add a fourth, you must decide which of the current three is no longer earning its keep. This strategy ensures you always have something fresh to watch without letting your monthly "savings" disappear into a dozen forgotten invoices.
